System Operation

Parking Aid - Audible

NOTE: Refer to owner literature for additional details for the use and operation Parking Aid system.

The available parking aid features are dependant on the vehicle trim level and options selected. The possible audio parking aid configurations are as follows:

  • Front and rear parking aid
  • Front and rear parking aid, plus active park assist and the side sensing system

The rear parking aid system sounds a warning tone through the rear audio speakers to alert the driver of stationary objects near the rear bumper when reverse is selected. The rear parking aid system assists the driver in detecting certain objects while the vehicle moves slowly with the transmission in reverse. The rear parking aid system may not detect moving objects.

The front parking aid system sounds a warning through the front audio speakers to alert the driver of stationary objects near the front bumper in all transmission gear selections except park and neutral when the vehicle is moving forward. The front parking aid system may not detect moving objects.

If equipped, the side sensing system uses the front and rear side sensors to detect and map obstacles that are near the sides of the vehicle. The side sensing system provides a warning tone if an obstacle is detected in the driving path of the vehicle on the right or left side while the vehicle moves slowly in forward or reverse.

The side sensing system is unavailable when the traction control system is deactivated. The side sensing system may not be available until the vehicle is driven approximately one vehicle length allowing the system to reinitialize after the following conditions:

  • Ignition switched ON, OFF, and back ON
  • Vehicle is stationary for two minutes or more
  • ABS is activated
  • Traction control system is activated

The parking aid system is disabled if a fault is detected in a parking aid sensor, the communications network or the IPMA . This is indicated by a "Check Parking Aid" message in the instrument cluster or message center.

The parking aid switch on the center console switch pack is used to disable the parking aid. When disabled using the center console mounted switch, the parking aid system remains disabled for one key cycle, or until the switch is pressed again.

On vehicles with active park assist, if sensors are blocked enough to impair function of the system. A notification is provided through the IPC and system will be disabled.

When a MyKey® is in use, the parking aid system is enabled by default and cannot be disabled.

Audible Parking Aid System Operation

The rear parking aid system calculates the distance to an object around the rear of the vehicle using 4 ultrasonic sensors. The rear parking aid sensors detect objects approximately 180 cm (70 in) from the rear of the vehicle, 50 cm (20 in) from the rear side of the vehicle, and 30 cm (12 in) above the ground. To detect objects behind the vehicle, the IPMA supplies voltage and ground to the rear ultrasonic sensors while monitoring a signal return circuit from each sensor. The 4 rear sensors share common voltage and ground circuits.

The front parking aid system calculates the distance to an object around the front of the vehicle using 4 ultrasonic sensors. The front parking aid sensors detect objects approximately 70 cm (27 in) from the front of the vehicle, 50 cm (20 in) from the front side of the vehicle, 30 cm (12 in) above the ground. To detect objects in front of the vehicle, the IPMA supplies voltage and ground to the front ultrasonic sensors while monitoring a signal return circuit from each sensor. The 4 front sensors share common voltage and ground circuits. Vehicles equipped with active park assist must be equipped with the front parking aid system.

Only objects that reflect a sufficient amount of sound waves are detected by the parking aid sensors. The surface properties, size and composition of an object can affect the ability of the parking aid system to detect the object.

Parking aid operation may be affected by:

  • Improper sensor installation or alignment
  • Dirt or ice covered sensors
  • Heavy rain or snow

The parking aid system detects objects when the vehicle is in any of the following conditions:

  • Reverse (rear parking aid).
  • Motion in any gear except neutral (front parking aid and side sensing system, if equipped).
  • Moving toward the object.
  • Stationary and the object is moving toward the vehicle.
  • The vehicle and object are both moving toward one another.

The following may trigger false detections when driving at slow/creeping speeds (could be decelerating or accelerating) less than 12 km/h (8 mph), but not at a stop:

  • Near another vehicle equipped with parking aid sensors. The other vehicle could be several meters away (it does not have to be within the detection zone of the host vehicle).
  • Near a truck or school bus with air brakes (while the bus/truck is applying their brake).
  • Near another signal with the same frequency.

NOTE: There is no false detection when the vehicle is at a standstill. Even if the sensors are detecting something, the system does not sound a warning when the vehicle is not moving.

As the distance to the obstacle decreases, the indicator blocks illuminate and move toward the vehicle icon as displayed on the audio system display. If there is no obstacle detected, the distance indicator blocks are greyed out.

Side Sensing

The side sensing system calculates the distance to an object around the sides of the vehicle using the four active parking aid sensors used for the active park assist. The side sensors detect objects approximately 60 cm (24 in) from the side of the vehicle. A chime sounds when an object is approximately 30 cm (12 in) from the side of the vehicle. To detect objects on the sides of the vehicle, the IPMA supplies voltage and ground to the front ultrasonic sensors while monitoring a signal return circuit from each sensor. The 2 front side sensors share common voltage and ground circuits with the front parking aid sensors. The 2 rear side sensors share common voltage and ground circuits with the rear parking aid sensors.

Parking Aid Audible Alert

Audio system volume is automatically reduced when a parking aid alert tone is sounded. The alert tone frequency increases as the vehicle gets closer to an obstacle. When an object is detected within 30 cm (12 in) of the sensors, the warning tone becomes continuous. When the vehicle stops moving the continuous tone stops after 3 seconds until the vehicle moves again. Objects detected outside the continuous tone area to the side of the vehicle generate a warning tone for 3 seconds. The warning tones are prioritized to the closest object. If the front and rear objects are located the same distance from the vehicle, the rear object is prioritized.

Component Description

Parking Aid Sensors

NOTE: The operating temperature range for the parking aid sensors is -40°C (-40°F) to 85°C (176°F).

NOTE: The park aid sensors all have similar appearance. However. the housing of the left front side and right front side sensors are 3mm deeper than the other park aid sensors.

The parking aid sensors are wide beam ultrasonic sensors. The sensors continuously send out ultrasonic signals to detect objects and communicate the information back to the IPMA .

Only objects which reflect enough sound waves are detected by the sensors. This varies due to the shape, surface properties and size of objects being detected. Incorrect sensor alignment, dirt covered sensors, heavy rain or snow can cause objects not to be recognized.

IPMA

The IPMA calculates and reports (via audio system tones) the distance between the front or rear bumper of the vehicle and an object. The IPMA requires PMI when replaced.

The IPMA uses the ethernet communiction network for OTA . For more information on OTA ,
Refer to: Module Configuration - System Operation and Component Description (418-01B Module Configuration - Vehicles With: Over-the-Air (OTA) Programming, Description and Operation).

Parking Aid Switch

The parking aid system is enabled or disabled using the parking aid switch. The parking aid system is only disabled for one key cycle. The parking aid system is enabled by default and cannot be disabled when a MyKey® restricted key is in use. The parking aid switch is integral to the all-terrain management switch assembly in the center console. It is hardwired to the IPMA .
