PINPOINT TEST A: THE UPPER ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER IS INOPERATIVE OR DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY

Refer to Wiring Diagrams Cell 33 for schematic and connector information.

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

PCM U0284:00 Lost Communication with Active Grille Air Shutter Module 'A': No Sub Type Information When the PCM does not receive communication from the upper active grille shutter actuator for a predetermined amount of time, the PCM sets this DTC .
PCM P05A2:00 Active Grille Air Shutter 'A' Control Circuit/Open: No Sub Type Information When the upper active grille shutter actuator senses open circuit, it sends a message to the PCM via the LIN . The PCM sets this DTC when the fault is communicated for a predetermined amount of time.
PCM P05A7:00 Active Grille Air Shutter 'A' Supply Voltage Circuit Low: No Sub Type Information When the upper active grille shutter actuator senses low voltage, it sends a message to the PCM via the LIN . The PCM sets this DTC when the fault is communicated for a predetermined amount of time.
PCM P05C0:00 Active Grille Air Shutter Module 'A' Over Temperature: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when the upper active grille shutter actuator detects excessive internal heat.
PCM P05A1:00 Active Grille Air Shutter 'A' Position Sensor Minimum/Maximum Stop Performance: No Sub Type Information When the upper active grille shutter actuator senses it is unable to obtain a fully open or closed position of the active grille shutter, it sends a message to the PCM via the LIN . The PCM then sets the DTC when the fault is communicated for a predetermined amount of time.
PCM P059F:00 Active Grille Air Shutter 'A' Performance/Stuck Off: No Sub Type Information When the upper active grille shutter actuator senses it is unable to move the active grille shutter, it sends a message to the PCM via the LIN . The PCM sets this DTC when the fault is communicated for a predetermined amount of time.
PCM U0046:00 Vehicle Communication Bus C: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when the PCM detects a short to voltage, ground or open in the LIN .

  • Upper Active grille shutter actuator

Visual Inspection and Pre-checks

  • Check for physical damage.
  • Check battery voltage.
  • Verify BJB fuse F8 (20A) is OK.
  • Make sure the grille opening does not have any debris or other obstructions that inhibit operation of the active grille shutters.

  • Using diagnostic scan tool, view PCM PID s.

Confirm the output of the PID test?
Yes True - GO to A9
No False - GO to A2

A2 CHECK THE UPPER ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER DEVICE ELECTRICAL FAULT (GRILL_A_ELEC_F) PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID)
  • Using diagnostic scan tool, view PCM PID s.
  • Using diagnostic scan tool,

    Access the  PCM  and monitor the  GRILL_A_ELEC_F  PID


Does the PID test indicate an electrical fault in the upper actuator?
Yes GO to A9
No GO to A3

A3 CHECK THE UPPER ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER DEVICE LOW SYSTEM VOLTAGE (GRILL_A_UNDRV) PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID)
  • Using diagnostic scan tool, view PCM PID s.
  • Using the diagnostic scan tool,

    Access the  PCM  and monitor the  GRILL_A_UNDRV  PID


Does the upper active grille shutter system detect a fault?
Yes GO to A9
No GO to A4

A4 CHECK THE UPPER ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER DEVICE OVER TEMPERATURE (GRILL_A_OVRT) PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID)
  • Using diagnostic scan tool, view PCM PID s.
  • Using diagnostic scan tool,

    Access the  PCM  and monitor the  GRILL_A_OVRT  PID


Does the PID test confirm the fault?
Yes GO to A9
No GO to A5

A5 VERIFY THE UPPER GRILLE SHUTTER OPERATION USING THE GRILL SHUTTER A POSITION (GRILL_CMDCAL) PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID)
  • START the engine.
  • ALLOW for upper active grille shutter calibration to complete.
  • Using the diagnostic scan tool, view the PCM PID
  • Using the diagnostic scan tool,

    Access the  PCM  and monitor the  GRILL_CMDCAL  PID


Is the upper AGS still attempting to complete the self learning?
Yes GO to A6
No GO to A9

A6 CHECK THE UPPER ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER DEVICE A POSITION FAULT (GRILL_A_POS_F) PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID)
  • Using diagnostic scan tool, view PCM PID s.
  • Using diagnostic scan tool,

    Access the  PCM  and monitor the  GRILL_A_POS_F  PID


Does the PID test confirm an end stop not found fault?
Yes GO to A9
No GO to A7

A7 CHECK THE UPPER ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER DEVICE STUCK/BLOCKED (GRILL_A_BLCK) PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID)
  • Using diagnostic scan tool, view PCM PID s.
  • Using diagnostic scan tool,

    Access the  PCM  and monitor the  GRILL_A_BLCK  PID


Does the PID test indicate a stuck upper active grille shutter actuator?
Yes GO to A9
No GO to A8

A8 VERIFY THE UPPER GRILLE SHUTTER OPERATION USING THE GRILLE SHUTTER A POSITION - COMMANDED (GRILL_A_CMD) PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID)
  • Perform visual inspection of upper active grille shutter system.
  • START the engine to allow for upper active grille shutter calibration to complete.
  • Using the diagnostic scan tool, view the PCM PID for Output State.

    Access the  PCM  and monitor the  GRILL_A_CMD (% Open)  PID

    while observing the upper active grille shutter operation from the front of vehicle.
  • Monitor the error state DIDs while commanding the upper active grille shutter system.

Does the upper grille shutter flag any faults while completing the output state control operation?
Yes For GRILL_LOSTCOMM - Lost Communication With Active Grille Shutter Control Module "A" , GO to A9
For GRILL_A_ELEC_F - Grille Shutter Module "A" - Indicates An Electrical Fault, GO to A9
For GRILL_A_UNDRV - Grille Shutter Module "A" - Indicates An Under Voltage Condition, GO to A9
For GRILL_A_OVRT - Grille Shutter Module "A" - Indicates An Over Temperature Condition, GO to A9
For GRILL_CMDCAL - Grille Shutter Module "A" - Self-calibration, GO to A9
For GRILL_A_POS_F - Grille Shutter "A" Actuator Fault - End Stop Not Found Or Found Where Not Expected, GO to A9
For GRILL_A_BLCK - Grille Shutter "A" Is Blocked - Unable To Achieve The Commanded Position, GO to A9
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.

A9 CHECK THE VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO THE UPPER ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER ACTUATOR
  • Check the following components for damage:
    • upper active grille shutter actuator
    • upper active grille shutter actuator linkage
    • upper active grille shutter fins
  • Ignition OFF.
  • Disconnect: Upper active grille shutter actuator C1766.
  • Ignition ON.
  • Measure:
    Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C1766-3   Ground

Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes GO to A10
No VERIFY BJB fuse F8 (20A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. If not OK, REFER to the Wiring Diagrams manual to identify the cause of the circuit short.

A10 CHECK THE UPPER ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER ACTUATOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
  • Ignition OFF.
  • Measure:

      C1766-1   Ground

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to A11
No REPAIR the circuit.

A11 CHECK THE LIN (LOCAL INTERCONNECT NETWORK) CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
  • Disconnect: Upper active grille shutter actuator C1766.
  • Disconnect: PCM C175B.
  • Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes GO to A12
No REPAIR the circuit.

A12 CHECK THE LIN (LOCAL INTERCONNECT NETWORK) CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Ignition ON.
  • Measure:

Is any voltage present?
Yes REPAIR the circuit.
No GO to A13

A13 CHECK THE LIN (LOCAL INTERCONNECT NETWORK) CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Ignition OFF.
  • Measure:

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes GO to A14
No REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTC s. REPEAT the self-test.

A14 CHECK THE UPPER ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER FOR OBSTRUCTIONS AND/OR MECHANICAL BINDING CONCERNS
  • Ignition OFF.
  • Remove the upper active grille shutter actuator.
    REFER to: Active Grille Shutter Actuator (501-02 Front End Body Panels, Removal and Installation).
  • Manually open and close the upper active grille shutter, removing any obstructions which can inhibit operation of the upper active grille shutter or linkage. The upper active grille shutter should open and close easily with no binding.

Does the upper active grille shutter operate freely with no binding or obstruction?
Yes GO to A15
No REPAIR the binding/obstruction, or if necessary, INSTALL a new upper active grille shutter.
REFER to: Active Grille Shutter (501-02 Front End Body Panels, Removal and Installation).

A15 CHECK FOR CORRECT UPPER ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER ACTUATOR AND POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) OPERATION
  • Ignition OFF.
  • Disconnect: Upper Active Grille Shutter Actuator C1766 (if not previously disconnected).
  • Disconnect: PCM C175B.
  • Inspect the upper active grille shutter actuator and PCM electrical connectors and jumper harness.
  • Repair:
    • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
    • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins as necessary
    • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
  • Reconnect the upper active grille shutter actuator connector, jumper harness and all previously disconnected system connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
  • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

Is the concern still present?
Yes CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSB s. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSB s address this concern, INSTALL a new upper active grille shutter actuator.
REFER to: Active Grille Shutter Actuator (501-02 Front End Body Panels, Removal and Installation).
CLEAR the DTC s. REPEAT the self-test. If the concern is still present, contact the Ford Technician Hotline.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.

PINPOINT TEST B: THE LOWER ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER IS INOPERATIVE OR DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY

Refer to Wiring Diagrams Cell 33 for schematic and connector information.

Yes GO to B9
No GO to B2

  • Using diagnostic scan tool, view PCM PID s.
  • Using diagnostic scan tool,

    Access the  PCM  and monitor the  GRILL_B_ELEC_F  PID


Does the PID test indicate an electrical fault in the lower actuator?
Yes GO to B9
No GO to B3

B3 CHECK THE LOWER ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER DEVICE LOW SYSTEM VOLTAGE (GRILL_B_UNDRV) PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID)
  • Using diagnostic scan tool, view PCM PID s.
  • Using the diagnostic scan tool,

    Access the  PCM  and monitor the  GRILL_B_UNDRV  PID


Does the active grille shutter system detect a fault?
Yes GO to B9
No GO to B4

B4 CHECK THE LOWER ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER DEVICE OVER TEMPERATURE (GRILL_B_OVRT) PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID)
  • Using diagnostic scan tool, view PCM PID s.
  • Using diagnostic scan tool,

    Access the  PCM  and monitor the  GRILL_B_OVRT  PID


Does the PID test confirm the fault?
Yes GO to B9
No GO to B5

B5 VERIFY THE LOWER GRILLE SHUTTER OPERATION USING THE GRILL SHUTTER B POSITION (GRILL_CMDCAL) PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID)
  • START the engine.
  • ALLOW for lower active grille shutter calibration to complete.
  • Using diagnostic scan tool, view PCM PID s.
  • Using the diagnostic scan tool,

    Access the  PCM  and monitor the  GRILL_B_CMDCAL  PID


Is the lower AGS still attempting to complete the self learning?
Yes GO to B6
No GO to B9

B6 CHECK THE LOWER ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER DEVICE A POSITION FAULT (GRILL_B_POS_F) PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID)
  • Using diagnostic scan tool, view PCM PID s.
  • Using diagnostic scan tool,

    Access the  PCM  and monitor the  GRILL_B_POS_F  PID


Does the PID test confirm an end stop not found fault?
Yes GO to B9
No GO to B7

B7 CHECK THE LOWER ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER DEVICE STUCK/BLOCKED (GRILL_B_BLCK) PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID)
  • Using diagnostic scan tool, view PCM PID s.
  • Using diagnostic scan tool,

    Access the  PCM  and monitor the  GRILL_B_BLCK  PID


Does the PID test indicate a stuck lower active grille shutter actuator?
Yes GO to B9
No GO to B8

B8 VERIFY THE LOWER GRILLE SHUTTER OPERATION USING THE GRILLE SHUTTER A POSITION - COMMANDED (GRILL_B_CMD) PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID)
  • Perform visual inspection of lower active grille shutter system.
  • START the engine to allow for lower active grille shutter calibration to complete.
  • Using the diagnostic scan tool, view the PCM PID for Output State.

    Access the  PCM  and monitor the  GRILL_B_CMD (% Open)  PID

    while observing the grille shutter operation from the front of vehicle.
  • Monitor the error state DIDs while commanding the active grille shutter system.

Does the lower active grille shutter flag any faults while completing the output state control operation?
Yes For GRILL_LOSTCOMM - Lost Communication With Active Grille Shutter Control Module "B" , GO to B9

  • Ignition OFF.
  • Disconnect: Lower active grille shutter actuator C1767.
  • Ignition ON.
  • Measure:
    Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C1767-3   Ground

Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes GO to B10
No VERIFY BJB fuse F8 (20A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. If not OK, REFER to the Wiring Diagrams manual to identify the cause of the circuit short.

B10 CHECK THE LOWER ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER ACTUATOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

Yes REPAIR the circuit.
No GO to B13

B13 CHECK THE LIN (LOCAL INTERCONNECT NETWORK) CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Ignition OFF.
  • Measure:

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes GO to B14
No REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTC s. REPEAT the self-test.

B14 CHECK THE LOWER ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER FOR OBSTRUCTIONS AND/OR MECHANICAL BINDING CONCERNS
  • Ignition OFF.
  • Remove the lower active grille shutter actuator.
    REFER to: Active Grille Shutter Actuator (501-02 Front End Body Panels, Removal and Installation).
  • Manually open and close the lower active grille shutter, removing any obstructions which can inhibit operation of the lower active grille shutter or linkage. The lower active grille shutter should open and close easily with no binding.

Does the lower active grille shutter operate freely with no binding or obstruction?
Yes GO to B15
No REPAIR the binding/obstruction, or if necessary, INSTALL a new lower active grille shutter.
REFER to: Active Grille Shutter (501-02 Front End Body Panels, Removal and Installation).

B15 CHECK FOR CORRECT LOWER ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTER ACTUATOR AND POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) OPERATION
  • Ignition OFF.
  • Disconnect: Lower active grille shutter actuator C1767 (if not previously disconnected).
  • Disconnect: PCM C175B.
  • Inspect the lower active grille shutter actuator and PCM electrical connector and jumper harness.
  • Repair:
    • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
    • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins as necessary
    • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
  • Reconnect the lower active grille shutter actuator connector, jumper harness and all previously disconnected system connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
  • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

Is the concern still present?
Yes CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSB s. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSB s address this concern, INSTALL a new active grille shutter actuator.
REFER to: Active Grille Shutter Actuator (501-02 Front End Body Panels, Removal and Installation).
CLEAR the DTC s. REPEAT the self-test. If the concern is still present, contact the Ford Technician Hotline.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
