Removal

NOTICE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.

NOTE: If the RH VCT units are being serviced at the same time as the LH VCT units, remove the RH VCT units first.

RH variable camshaft timing (VCT) unit

  1. Remove the RH timing chain.
    Refer to: Timing Chain (303-01 Engine - 3.5L EcoBoost (272kW/370PS), Removal and Installation).
    1. Remove and discard the VCT unit bolts.
    1. Remove the VCT units.

LH variable camshaft timing (VCT) unit

  1. Remove the LH timing chain.
    Refer to: Timing Chain (303-01 Engine - 3.5L EcoBoost (272kW/370PS), Removal and Installation).
    1. Remove and discard the VCT unit bolts.
    1. Remove the VCT units.

Installation

LH variable camshaft timing (VCT) unit

    1. Install the VCT units.
    1. Install the new VCT unit bolts.
      Torque:
        Stage 1:  30 lb.ft (40 Nm)
        Stage 2:  Loosen:   360°
        Stage 3:  18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
        Stage 4:  150°
  1. Install the LH timing chain.
    Refer to: Timing Chain (303-01 Engine - 3.5L EcoBoost (272kW/370PS), Removal and Installation).

RH variable camshaft timing (VCT) unit

    1. Install the VCT units.
    1. Install the new VCT unit bolts.
      Torque:
        Stage 1:  30 lb.ft (40 Nm)
        Stage 2:  Loosen:   360°
        Stage 3:  18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
        Stage 4:  150°
  1. Install the RH timing chain.
    Refer to: Timing Chain (303-01 Engine - 3.5L EcoBoost (272kW/370PS), Removal and Installation).

    Preliminary Inspection

    Visually inspect the CV joints, housing, boots, and clamps for obvious signs of mechanical damage.
    If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step
    If the cause is not visually evident, verify the symptom and REFER to Symptom Chart: NVH.
