Lincoln Navigator: Four-Wheel Drive Systems / Four-Wheel Drive Systems - Overview. Description and Operation

Lincoln Navigator 2018-2026 Workshop Manual / Automatic Transmission / Four-Wheel Drive Systems / Four-Wheel Drive Systems - Overview. Description and Operation

Torque-On-Demand Four Wheel Drive System

The torque-on-demand system consists of the following components:

  • ATCM
  • TCCM
  • 4WD mode indicators and messages in the IPC message center
  • Transfer case with high capacity clutch

The transfer case is equipped with an electronically controlled high capacity clutch which is located inside the transfer case. The clutch provides torque to the front driveline in all 4WD modes.

The transfer case is shifted electronically based on the selected drive mode.

Lincoln Drive Modes allows the operator to select different drive modes. Each mode will select the appropriate transfer case mode for the terrain with no additional input from the operator.

Vehicles equipped with the 1-speed torque-on-demand system can operate in 2WD (2H), 4WD High (4H) or 4WD AUTO (4A).

The transfer case for the 2-speed torque-on-demand system also includes a shift motor and reduction gearset.

2-speed systems can operate in 2WD (2H), 4WD AUTO (4A), 4WD High (4H), 4WD Low (4L), or Neutral. When shifting into or out of 4WD (4L) range, the TCCM requires that the vehicle speed is less than 5 km/h (3 mph) and the transmission is in N .
